Registered Nurse (Nurse Manager) MHRRTP
Duties include but not limited to:
Assuming responsibility for staffing and scheduling of permanent and supplemental nursing staff, and ensures that assignments of staff reflect their appropriate utilization, compliance with staff guidelines and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. Fiscally responsible, and in collaborations with the Associate Chief Nurse, Mental Health plan and monitors the budget for their area of responsibility. Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates. Evaluating the performance of subordinates. Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates. Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters. Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors. Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate; and (8) Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training. Serves as a role model and coaches and supports staff in critical thinking regarding professional nursing practice. Ensuring that nursing practice is consistent with external standards such as TJC and internal standards such as the VA Performance Measures. Providing guidance and direction to the performance improvement process. Establishing effective interpersonal relationships with health team members, patients, and their families / significant others. Participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. Participating in the development and full implementation of approved policies and procedures. Must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Work Schedule:

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Experience:
Master's degree in nursing or in a related field and Board certification from a VA-approved certifying body. Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, geriatrics and mental health inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with visits to the Emergency Department and admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
